Double Side Printing in PSP9

This tutorial assumes some basic knowledge of PSP. You can download an evaluation copy of the latest version from here. More experienced users may be able to adapt this tutorial for other versions. This tutorial uses a template by Fran, visit her website at Frans New Beginnings. The project makes a gum wrapper (or other similar candy) in the shape of a Halloween Frankenstein coffin. Graphics used are ©PCHugware

  1. Open the template you're using for your project. Make 2 duplicates - SHIFT+D. Close the original of the template.
  2. One of the duplicates is the front of your project. Finish this layout. Save your work.
  3. If your template is not symmetrical, use PSP's mirror utility (Image, Mirror) to flip the template so that when printing, the back and front match up. Use this second duplicate for the inside of your project.
  4. Finish your layout for the inside of your project. Save your work.
  5. With both inside/outside (back/front) parts of your project open in PSP, File -> Print Layout (File -> Print Multiple Images in ver 7).
  6. Both parts of your images show as a thumbnail on the left side of the screen, as well as any other images that are open. Setup your printer with the appropriate paper and colour settings (Toolbar - Print Settings). Note that the area shown on the right side of the Print Layout screen, shows the printable part of paper size you've chosen for your printer.
  7. Double click one part of your project...note how PSP snaps the project to the top left corner of the page. Always choose your printer settings first, this ensures the proper placement of projects within printing parameters that are specific to each printer (especially colour inkjets).

Now click the printer icon on the toolbar. Please note that PSP will not prompt you for a printer setup, it just dumps the print directly to the printer with the settings that exist...if you didn't do the Print Settings step then you may not get the desired results, and you may waste your paper!
  8. Click your project on the page, then press Delete. Take your printed project and place the paper back in the printer, flipping it over first. Make sure you put the paper in the right way so that both sides of your project will match up.
  9. Double click the second part of your project. This snaps it into the same place (top left corner) of the printable area of the page. In order to properly place it click the Place Upper Right icon on the Toolbar. This will snap the image to the right side of the page so it looks like this:
  10. Click the printer icon to send to printer.
  11. If your project doesn't quite line up, it may be because your printer has a larger unprintable area on the left or right side of the page. Check your printer's specifications. You can make minor adjustments by nudging your project - click on the project, use left/right/up/down arrow keys.
And that's double sided printing in PSP! I have used this method quite successfully through 2 or 3 versions of PSP.
